Memento
Materials: Resin, Black Ink, Broken Wine Glass
Measurements: 4" x 3" x 1.5"
As a very personal, reflective project, I decided to create my memento around the memory of my dad passing away when I was twelve years old. Without going into extremely personal details, I created this piece to reflect struggles both he and I faced around the time of his death. I used resin mixed with black ink to hold the shape of liquid in a wine glass. To do this, I mixed the ink and resin first, and then poured the mixture into a wine glass set on its side. I allowed the large mixture to dry for over 72 hours before breaking the glass off around the memento to reveal the final product. The resin created a shiny surface where I could look back at myself to see my reflection, and the black ink was used to represent the emptiness and darkness I felt when receiving the news of his death. There is a small section on the memento that still has a piece of the wine glass stuck to it, but there are shards that are breaking off in small pieces – this is to represent the memory slowly fading, yet it is still with me every day.
